Recent Recordings by Area Jazz Artists
Jason Quick is from the Toledo, Ohio area, obtaining his jazz education from Wayne State and Bowling Green. Comprising his trio on this recent recording, Get What’s Comin’, are Galen Bundy on organ and Travis Aukerman on drums. Producer Alex Anest is a longtime Ann Arbor guitarist and group leader. This date explores jazz, rock, blues, and some astral explorations.
The title tune gives a strong taste of the trio, with guitar leading uptempo organ and drums support. Next, “Curls into Infinity” is a slower organ groove with a lengthy, but strong singing theme. With “Shattered Whiskey Jar, “ we get a joyful jaunty exploration. “Foundation” features drums out front with a rock/blues arrangement, and on “Devil’s Night” guitar and organ circle the hood like night owls, spirits soaring. “Slide on Down” offers a nod to Jimi Hendrix, winding up with spatial, smooth “Enter My Space” and the playful chat of “What Box?,” drawing this listener in with Quick’s searching guitar.
