Jason Moran This Year’s Artist-in-Residence at DJF

The Detroit Jazz Festival has named pianist and composer Jason Moran as the 2025 Artist-In-Residence. He is currently Artistic Director for jazz at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. and got there based on his innovative artistic profile. Moran has eighteen solo releases mostly on Blue Note records and has most recently worked on the music of Duke Ellington on the occasion of the master’s 125th birthday. He plans to perform some Ellington works at the DJF with a Detroit big band — which is a new challenge for him since he seldom works with bands that size. He has played in the Detroit /Ann Arbor area several times. You can get a taste of how Lloyd and Moran transform standards like “Mood Indigo” and “You’ve Changed” if you have access to services like Spotify. We would expect more of the same at the Michigan!
