Rollins and Marsalis Headline Detroit Festival

The 2012 Detroit Jazz Festival will be held over Labor Day weekend at Hart Plaza and Campus Martius.

Opening night (Friday) will feature this year’s artist in residence, trumpeter Terence Blanchard, and tenor giant Sonny Rollins. The following three days will be full of music from noon until after 10:00 p.m. on four stages. Featured will be Wynton Marsalis (with his quintet on Saturday), Pat Metheny, Chick Corea (with Gary Burton), Wayne Shorter (and his quartet), Dave Douglas and Joe Lovano (Sound Prints), Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Fred Hersch, Donald Harrison, Ellery Eskelin, Jerry Gonzales, and Poncho Sanchez. A number of Detroiters who have made it in New York will also be on the bill — for example Louis Hayes, Curtis Fuller, Charles McPherson, Kenny Garrett, and Geri Allen.
