Schumacher Continues to Fill In the Gaps in Burns’ Jazz

Hazen Schumacher has given four of six talks in a SEMJA series called "Filling In the Gaps: Enhancing Ken Burns' Jazz Series." The audiences have been very enthusiastic and we encourage others to come out for the two remaining talks on June 3 and 10.

Each talk stands on its own so it is not necessary to do the series as a whole. Schumacher gives a non-technical discussion of jazz history in words and music to increase the appreciation of jazz. A number of topics are covered, such as the role of radio and recordings; instruments and instrumentations; music types, solos, and changes; singers and accompanists; and the big bands.

Schumacher achieved nationwide popularity as the host of "Jazz Revisited" on National Public Radio and has taught jazz history at the University of Michigan and in the community.

The talks take place on Sunday, June 3 and 10 at the Bird of Paradise, 312 S. Main Street in Ann Arbor from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $5 at the door for each talk, or $4 for SEMJA members. There will be a cash bar and snacks available. Please call SEMJA at 734-662-8514 for more information. Since Shumacher's emphasis in the first five sessions is on the early periods of jazz, lectures on later phases of the music are also planned.
