The Dave Holland Big Band Plays The Michigan Theateregendary bassist Dave Holland is a busy guy leading bands of all sizes. He will kick off the University Musical Society's Jazz Series this season with his Big Band on Saturday, November 17, at 8:00 p.m. in a concert at the Michigan Theater in Ann Arbor. His thirteen-piece band includes a number of New York City's most exciting soloists, both veterans and up-and-coming talents. Among the more experienced in Holland's band are altoist Antonio Hart, trombonist Robin Eubanks and trumpeter Duane Eubanks (from the renowned Philadelphia jazz family), and the very original vibraphonist Steve Nelson. Holland was born in England but came to the United States in the late 1960s to play with Miles Davis and was present on Miles' seminal Bitches Brew recording. After this flying start on the jazz scene he played with names such as Stan Getz, Jack DeJohnette, Chick Corea, and Pat Metheny. While recovering from a heart attack in 1982, Holland decided to form his own groups, starting out with a quintet that included trumpeter Kenny Wheeler and Robin Eubanks. Since then he has led groups of varying sizes from trios to big bands and toured with them on a worldwide scale. This is his third performance for UMS with his big band.
