Around Town

Clarinetist and singer Sarah D’Angelo kicked off the jazz portion of the Ann Arbor Summer Festival on June 9. She was accompanied by keyboardist Alyssa Schmidt, bassist Michael Palazola and drummer Jesse Kramer. D’Angelo showed some of her clarinet chops and dedicated one song to her sister. Schmidt gave us a taste of her classical chops in a potpourri of pieces by Debussy. D’Angelo brought along trombonist Terry Kimura from the Paul Keller big band.

Reed player Piotr Michalowski and bassist Damon Smith performed at Ziggy’s in downtown Ypsi on June 6. Smith is an astounding bass player who has complete command of his instruments, similar to Michalowski’s over his soprano, bass clarinet, and tenor sax.
