James Tatum Receives Award
Pianist and jazz educator James Tatum was one of the recipients of the 20th Annual ArtServe Michigan Governor’s Awards for Art & Culture. Tatum and the James Tatum Foundation were the first recipients of the People’s Choice award from ArtServe.
Tatum is a well-known jazz pianist and composer who has performed with Coleman Hawkins, Wynton Marsalis, and others. As a jazz educator he lectures frequently on the history and art of jazz. In 1987 he organized his non-profit Foundation which has expanded its activities ever since. Tatum has for many years held concerts at Orchestra Hall at which scholarships have been awarded to young people in many areas of the arts: music, dance, sculpture, and painting.
