Music Hall Selects New Director of Jazz
Festival
The
Music Hall in Detroit has ended its search for a new Program Director,
who will oversee all of Music Hall's artistic activities, including
theater, dance and music. This includes directing
the Detroit International Jazz Festival, starting with the 2001 festival.
The new director is Frank
Malfitano, founder and director of the Syracuse (NY) Jazz
Festival. WDET-FM's Ed Love is the director of this year's Jazz
Festival.
According to the Detroit
Free Press, Malfitano brings to Detroit a long history
of jazz concert production. He founded the Syracuse festival in the
early 1980s and has helped make it the Northeast's largest free jazz
festival. Malfitano has been quoted as saying that jazz festivals
should ensure that as many styles of jazz are represented as possible.
This philosophy seems to be reflected in his programming decisions
in Syracuse.
