DownBeat Awards to Michigan Students

The May issue of DownBeat magazine has just appeared with the complete list of its 43rd annual Student Music Awards. SEMJA heartily congratulates five Michigan awardees, two from Ann Arbor’s Community High School jazz program under the direction of Jack Wagner, and three from the Jazz Studies department at the Western Michigan University School of Music, chaired by Scott Cowan.

The Community High winners are:

  • Oliver Mayman, vibraphone (Jazz Soloist: High School Outstanding Performances)

  • Bad Dudes (Small Jazz Combo: High School Outstanding Performances)

The Western Michigan winners are: 

  • Jalousie (Latin Group: Graduate College Outstanding Performance) 

  • Lushh (Blues/Pop/Rock Group: Graduate College Outstanding Performance)  

  • Grayson Nye, piano (Blues/Pop/Rock: Soloist)
