Marion Hayden Next in SEMJA / Kerrytown Series

Marion HaydenMarion Hayden and her Detroit Legacy Ensemble will perform at Kerrytown Concert House at 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 8, in SEMJA's collaborative Club series with the Concert House.

Hayden's sextet celebrates the contributions of Detroit composers/performers Donald Walden and Kenn Cox, who both passed away in 2008. The all-star group includes trumpeter Dwight Adams, tenorist Vincent Bowens, pianist Henry Gibson, bassist Hayden, percussionist Mubarek Hakim, and drummer George Davidson. These players were frequent collaborators of Walden and Cox and infuse their compositions and arrangements with a lot of spirit and swing.

Club SeriesHayden is part of a new generation of leaders/mentors in the Detroit jazz world with her sextet and her teaching activities. She was in turn mentored by trumpeter Marcus Belgrave and tenorist Wendell Harrison and eventually became one of the most sought after bass players in the city. Her association with pianist Kenn Cox, and drummer Roy Brooks (and his Artistic Truth) was particularly influential. In 1989 she co-founded Straight Ahead, which included violinist Regina Carter, and landed a recording contract with Atlantic Records. She has degrees from both the University of Michigan and Michigan State University and has taught at U-M for several years. In 2007 she released her first CD as a leader (Visions), with compositions of her own and Cox, Wendell Harrison, and Kirk Lightsey (go to her website for more information).

This concert is presented in a club format at the Concert House, which means that drinks will be served and tables will be available next to the stage. To reserve a seat, please contact the Concert House at 734-769-2999. The Kerrytown Concert House is located at 415 North Fourth Avenue, in Ann Arbor, next to the historic Kerrytown Market area. If you have any questions about the event, feel free to call SEMJA at 734-668-7470.
