U-M Celebrates Geri Allen

The University of Michigan Jazz Program will present a tribute concert to their former colleague the late pianist Geri Allen at the Ark on April 5 (8:00 p.m.). The celebration will feature students, faculty and alumni in various configurations playing music associated with Allen.

The U-M Jazz Ensemble will play Ellen Rowe’s arrangement of Mary Lou Williams’ “Roll ‘Em,” with solo features by pianist Alexis Lombre and saxophonist Kasan Belgrave (his father was Allen’s mentor). The ensemble will also play Allen’s “Unconditional Love” and an arrangement of “Cherokee” by Dennis Wilson, featuring Allen’s former student Stephen Grady. Student-led ensembles will play several songs composed by Geri Allen, like “Feed the Fire.” Other faculty contributing will be saxophonist Andrew Bishop, bassist Bob Hurst, and trumpeter Ed Sarath. Two former piano students, Michael Malis and Ian Finkelstein will also be on the program.

Tickets are available at the Michigan Union Ticket Office or at the door.
