Harry Allen Swings KCH

Harry Allen showed that he is a swinger in the Al Cohn/Zoot Sims mold in his first appearance at the Kerrytown Concert House in Ann Arbor on March 1.

Allen kicked the evening off with Cohn’s “P-Town,” and later on played “The Opener,” an Al and Zoot favorite. Allen brought a lot of imagination and feeling to the performance of standards like “Lover Come Back to Me,” and was helped along greatly by Chicago guitarman Andy Brown and our own Paul Keller (bass) and Pete Siers (drums). He recently collaborated with pianist and lyricist Judy Carmichael on Can You Love Once More? and treated us to “There Was Once A Time” from that CD. It was a gorgeous ballad where Allen showed off his breathy and tender tenor tone.

I know I am not alone to hope that Allen will return to KCH soon.
